Lotte Group President probation South Korea Supreme Court upholds the original judgment

South Korea’s Supreme Court today maintained the probation sentence of the chairman of the retail giant Lotte Group (Xin Dongbin). Xin Dongbin was accused of bribery and convicted in a large-scale corruption scandal that caused former President Park Geun-hye to step down.

Agence France-Presse reported that 64-year-old Xin Dongbin was suspected of providing 7 billion won (about NT$200 million) in bribes to a foundation controlled by Park Geun-hye, Choi Shun-soo, in exchange for a duty-free shop license. In February last year, the first trial was sentenced to 30 months. imprisonment.

Lotte Group is one of the huge family “chapters” that dominates the South Korean economy. It has created the economic prosperity of South Korea for decades, but the relationship between the chaebol and the political circles is unclear and has been criticized by the outside world.

When the Court of Appeal made its second-instance judgment in October last year, it sentenced Xin Dongbin to a suspended sentence; the Supreme Court upheld the above judgment today.

The court statement stated: “We have confirmed that there is no misunderstanding of the legal principles in the decision of the Court of Appeal.”
